Summer adventures with your pet

Getting back to normal. Summer is fast approaching, and we all want to get outside. Here are some summer activities to do with your pet.

1.     Go to the beach. Nebraska isn’t known for their sandy beaches due to a lack of oceans around here but, it may surprise you we actually do have some wonderful beaches in the area. Below are a few beaches to check out with your pup. Always check local leash laws before visiting.

• Lake McConaughy is a beautiful lake and if you’ve never been, make time to go! They have dog friendly areas to enjoy with your pup.

• Walnut Creek Recreation Area has 450 acres of fun for you and your pet. They offer an off-leash area with access to the lake specifically for dogs.

• Platte River State Park offers bluffs, forest and beautiful rolling hills. Go on a hike with your pet or cool down in the water. Always check regulations for pet friendly areas.

There are many more amazing beaches to visit with your pet in Nebraska. A quick Google search will offer a variety of options and reviews from the community.

2.     Go play frisbee golf. Playing frisbee golf is not only fun, but also a great workout too. Make sure to check leash laws but generally it’s pretty dog friendly. It’s a great way for you and your pup to spend the afternoon. Here are a couple local parks that offer frisbee golf.

• Seymour Smith Park

            • Cunningham Park

            • Treasure Cove

3.     Go on a hike. Gear up and get outside. Nebraska has some amazing trails to explore with your pet. Again, check if the trail is dog friendly and what the leash laws are. Try and go early to beat the heat in the summer. Mid-day heat can be too much for you and your pet.

• Schramm Park

• Chalco Hills Recreation Area

• Stone Creek Falls

4.     Practice some old tricks. Keeping your pups mind healthy is just as important as keeping their bodies healthy. Take an afternoon to work on manners, recall and nose work. Games like find it will keep them busy and wear them out.

These are just a few ideas to get you and your pet outside this summer. Grab your pet and go on an adventure.
