May is Lyme Disease Prevention Month. How to protect your pet!

It’s starting to warm up outside, flowers are starting to bloom, and the trees are growing back all their leaves. While we all can’t wait to get back outside, there are some dangers that you need to prepare your pet for. TICKS!

If you own a pet, you are hopefully aware of the risks of ticks on your pet, with that said I’m sure most of you have dealt with a tick on your pet. It’s part of nature and it’s inevitable, however here are a few things you can do to help reduce the risk.

As we know it’s important to protect our pets against ticks, because ticks can cause Lyme Disease, which we can all agree is not good! The first obvious thing you can do is have your pet on a tick and flea preventative. (Talk to your vet about which one is best for your pet) If you do find a tick on your pet be sure to remove it as promptly as possible.

If you have a lot of brush, grass or wooded areas in your yard be sure to keep them trimmed to reduce areas for them to hide. They love these types of environments.  However, we all love a good nature walk and sometimes that can’t be avoided. This is why tick preventive is important.

As I mentioned we all love nature walks but there are a lot of ways to get outside on cement trails, or even a stroll around the shopping plaza with your pet. We offer nature walks here at Clearview for our lodging clients however when the weather doesn’t want to play nice, we must stick to the gravel trails instead. The dogs love it just the same! They don’t really care what the surface is, they are just enjoying your company on a super fun walk.

Finally, if you do suspect your pet may have Lyme Disease notify your vet.
