Things you need to know before boarding your pet this holiday season

Tips you need to know before boarding your pet this holiday season

1. Your pet should be up to date on all vaccinations. Check with your lodging facility for a list of required vaccines. Also, ask what their policy is for the Bordetella vaccine, as most facilities recommend it.

2. Book as early as possible. Most lodging facilities fill up quickly around the holidays due to travel plans. Be sure to book as soon as you know your itinerary to avoid the rush.

3. Bring familiar items for your pet. Most lodging facilities will allow you to bring items that make your pet more comfortable. These items can include blankets, beds, and toys.

4. Bring your pets food. While some facilities will offer you to use their food, it is easier on your pet if you bring their own food. Abruptly changing your pets food can cause unnecessary discomfort like diarrhea and upset stomach.

5. Keep stress levels down by staying calm. The time leading up to your arrival, it is hard not to give our pets that extra attention and love as we feel guilty for leaving them. We all do it and it's perfectly fine! However, we can trigger anxiety in our pets with our actions and emotions. Try to remain calm when dropping off and picking up your pet.

6. Always ask a lot of questions. If you have never been to the facility, ask for a tour. As a pet owner you want to trust your pet is cared for while you're away.
