Do’s and Don’ts for teaching your dog to come
Do’s and Don’ts for teaching your dog to come
Does your dog understand what you're asking of them? We expect our pets to KNOW what we want and forget that we need to TEACH them what we want. Getting a new pet comes with a lot of responsibility. If you give your dog the extra time and training in the beginning, it will save you a headache down the road.It is important that our pets come when we tell them to. This is for the safety of your pet and others that surround you. If you can not control your pet, that may lead to behavior problems in the future. Here are a few simple tips to help you succeed at teaching your dog to come on command. Good Luck, and remember consistency and patience are key!
🐾 Don’t expect your dog to know his name.
It’s exciting naming your new pet. Don’t get frustrated if your pup isn’t coming when called. It takes some training before they understand what you are asking them to do.
🐶 Do teach your dog
his name.
Taking the time to train your pet to come when called will
make life much easier. In this phase be sure to give lots of rewards or treats
when your dog comes on command.
🐾 Don’t only call your
pet for activities they dread.
Dogs don’t like to come when they have to do things like
bath time or leaving the dog park. This is why training is important. Have you
ever called your dog for a bath and he runs?
🐶 Do call your pet for fun activities.
Dogs love to have fun, use that to your advantage. Activities on a regular basis will teach your pup it’s a good thing to come when called.
🐾 Don’t call your pet
repeatedly and let them ignore you.
Calling your pet repeatedly is something we are all guilty
of. We need to be aware of this bad habit. This can lead to your pet ignoring
you and coming when they want to.
🐶 Do continue training your pet with rewards and consistency.
Consistency is key here. Your pet needs to know you are the leader and he must come when called the first time. Always reward your pet when they follow directions.
🐾 Don’t yell or scowl
at your dog when calling them.
Pets do not like to come when they are being punished. Dogs
can read your mood by your body language and tone of voice. Do not call them
over with excitement only to discipline them. Your dog may stop coming all
together.
🐶 Do use a normal tone of voice when calling your dog.
When calling your pet use a calm and authoritative voice. Remember to reward your pet for following directions.
