Tips for trimming your pet's nails

Are your pups nails getting too long? Don't worry! Here are some tips to help you calmly trim those nails until you can get him into the groomer. Remember start sensitizing them from puppies if possible, clippers can be a scary thing for dogs if their not used to them.

Tip #1: Sensitize your dog

As mentioned above, sensitize your dog to the touch of their paws and clippers. While doing this, do not actually cut the nail and follow up with a treat. This is so the dog will learn to relax when his paws are touched or clipped. This step will not only make the dog calmer, it will also make you more confident.

Tip #2: Check your dog's paws

Always inspect your dog's paws for hair overgrowth and other objects that may leave your pet in discomfort. Trimming the hair on their paws is also important as it holds pollen and other irritants.

 Tip #3: Clipper Choice

You may find you prefer one type of clipper over another and that's perfectly OK. Generally, grinders are a safe and easy alternative to blade clippers. Be sure to choose clippers that make you and your pet most comfortable.

Tip #4: Don't cut the quick

Dogs have what's called a quick. This is where the blood flows to their nail. Light colored nails are easier to see the quick as oppose to dark colored nails. You will see a pink-ish area on the light colored nails indicating where not to cut.

Tip #5:  Don't panic if you cut the quick

We've all accidentally clipped the quick at some point. When this happens, DO NOT PANIC. Generally, this is not a serious injury. There will be a decent amount of blood but that is normal. Use a styptic powder to stop any bleeding. If you do not have any available, flour will work in a pinch.

Tip #6: Keep up on nail trims

Keeping up on nail trimming is important for your dog's well being. If your pet's nails are to long they will begin to curl into the pad which can be painful for your pup.

That's it! With these tips you should feel confident in trimming your pets nails. As with everything, it will take some practice. The important thing is that you and your pet are relaxed during this process.
