When the weather gets warmer, the bugs come out! This includes ticks and other pesky insects that drive us all crazy. Here are a few ways to keep your dog tick free as well as what to do if you find one on your furry little guy.

  • ALWAYS check your dog when coming inside from areas that may contain ticks. This is extremely important! Checking you pet will allow you to take action quickly if you do find a tick.
  • Check your pet in the "armpit" areas, between toes, inside their ears, neck and in areas with thick or deep fur. Ticks love hiding in hard to see areas of your pet so make sure to check thoroughly.
  • Use preventative measures such as a repellent for ticks. This may help prevent a tick from feasting on your pooch. It will not eliminate ticks in the environment, but may prevent a bite to your pup.
  • Reduce the tick habitat. If ticks are a problem in your yard, there are a couple things you can do to reduce the population. Keep all wooded areas clear of loose debris, trimmed and use animal safe yard sprays or treatments.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about tick-borne diseases and how to effectively prevent against them.
  • Remember, being aware of where ticks are located, how they feed, and how to control their populations are all key factors in keeping your dog tick free.
