When it warms up your first thought is to get everyone out of the house, and that includes your
fur-babies too. There are somethings you need to remember when taking your dog out in the heat. We will talk about ways to keep your dog cool, and some things you should avoid as well.

We all think of our pets as our family, and they are! Make sure to take some of the same precautions as you would with one of the kiddos, or any other family member. We want to keep them safe while having fun.

Below are 5 helpful tips to keeping your dog cool this summer.

1.  If it is extremely hot out, try taking your pooch out in the mornings or evenings instead.

Limiting outdoor time to morning or evening can help keep them cooler and prevent overheating. Dog's use panting as a way to keep cool and maintain their internal temperature. If you are out in the mid-day, allow a space with shade for your pet to rest and cool down.

2. Be aware of the pavement temperatures.

Cement and other surfaces will get very hot while sitting in the sun all day. Dog's pads are their only defense and can get quite damaged on hot surfaces. They don't have the ability to put shoes on like we do so it is very important to keep their pads safe from damage.

3. NEVER leave your pet in the car, especially on a hot day.

This can become a disaster very quickly! Have you ever opened your car door after a few minutes in the sun and it is unbearably hot? It's even worse for our furry friends. If you know you have errands to run, just leave them at home. They will appreciate it rather than being stuck in a hot car which can end up fatal for them.

4. Water, Water and more Water.

Hydration is a very important factor in keeping your pet from becoming dehydrated. This is a just as important as overheating. As pets pant to keep cool, they loose fluids and need to replace them. Make sure your animal has access to water at all times, but especially on those hot days.

5. Make yummy treats to keep them cool.
